Nelz, you are one intriguing human being. I was the recipient of one of your "Angel Investor" cards, which you did warn me was total BS :) But I wasn't sure if you meant it or not!

I'm the gal from the iHop, btw, and I still am not sure I believe in all this douchebaggery that everyone is throwing about. But I must say, I was one of the douchebags handing out cards right and left, and feel not the least bit apologetic about it. You never know who you will meet that will be cool, or lead to something cool. Or at least, I never know.

Hope to meet soon and get to know you more. And get your real contact information :p

Best,

I think an active rather than passive stance towards the accepting/trading of business cards is good. This is probably heresy for a marketeer to say, but I'm much more interested in relationships than numbers.

You'd think as a marketeer I'd be aggressively trading cards/contact information, but I don't. Even at tradeshows where I'm staffing a booth, I aim for quality over quantity.

Outside of work situations, I rarely if ever give out my business card. (I adopted this stance when services that traded contact information for business cards sprung up.) Instead I often give my name and leave it up to the individual to seek me out. Other times if I've had a really good conversation, depending on value I see - and the other person sees - I'll exchange a phone number/email address on the spot.

I think more people than you realize may have a similar policy re: passively accepting/trading business cards. Marketeers know what's going to happen to the card - and our phone/inbox - once it leaves our hands, so we'll be among the first to guard our own information.

Nice post! Although, unless things have changed, there are a few things that you seem to have missed:
First, you should be able to attach a bank account to your clipper account online. They may have changed this, though, as I know they had some problems with it.

Also, they've had "add value" machines at the major stations, unless they took them out, where you can add value to your card with cash. Oh, and the walgreens and other places where you can buy the card can put passes or cash on there, although their clerks are pretty notorious for getting passes wrong and sticking just money on there instead. You theoretically shouldn't need to deal with the online bit at all.

I wanted to mention that you are supposed to be able to remove your name from the card account. I was frustrated with trying to explain to people why on earth you would want to do that. I'm glad it's not just me that's thinking that.

Boston's CharlieCard system is similar with one big difference: You can add value to the card with cash on buses or at T stops. I actually have two of the cards and neither card is directly linked to my name.

Of course the AOL data flap a few years ago where they released search results with the names replaced by ID numbers showed with a little ingenuity it's not that hard to figure out who someone is (I have the data set by the way if you ever want to see how many people search for ways to kill their spouses). That said, I would expect in a highly populated city like Boston or SF if you just had the tag on you could generally figure out where someone lived or worked (within a several block radius) but would still be left with several thousand possible candidates.

Seems to me the "convenience" of the card autoloading from your credit card is the big problem. Would be nice if you could opt out of that part of the system.
