I read on Matt Raible’s Blog that Virtuas is no longer in existence. From what I knew of them, they had a business model that benefitted the Free/Libre/Open-Source Software (FLOSS) community. When I talked to Matt, he said they encouraged and supported his work on open source projects, and they also encouraged him to do his speaking engagements with conferences like No Fluff, Just Stuff. I don’t know why Virtuas closed, but I (kind of) hope that it wasn’t because they weren’t bringing in the cash… I really wish this type of business model can succeed.
In other news, I just realized that I won’t be able to attend the NFJS conferences as easily when I move to San Francisco in February. I really enjoyed those conferences. However, now that I’ll be in San Francisco, maybe I’ll be hitting JavaOne? This all depends on my future employer, I guess.
